Silver Bay → Grand Marais spring road trip: how to plan stops that don’t feel rushed

Published April 18, 2026

A road trip framework for April: pick 2–3 true stops, keep the rest as optional pull-offs, and build a ‘warm’ plan plus a ‘windy’ plan.

The Highway 61 temptation is to stop everywhere. In April, that’s how you end up cold, hungry, and behind schedule. Instead, plan like a local: pick a few meaningful stops and let the rest stay optional.

A simple planning rule: 2 anchors + 3 optional pull-offs

  • Anchor stop #1: a short hike or waterfall you’ll enjoy even if it’s damp.
  • Anchor stop #2: a town stop where you can warm up and eat.
  • Optional pull-offs: pick three viewpoints and only do them if conditions feel good.

Build two versions: Warm plan vs. Windy plan

  1. Warm plan: longer outdoor time + more walking.
  2. Windy plan: fewer shoreline minutes + more indoor resets (coffee, shops, meals).

Make Google work for you

  • Save key places to a list before you start driving (signal can be spotty).
  • Search for trail condition updates the morning of your trip.
  • Use ‘open now’ filters carefully in shoulder-season and still call ahead when it matters.
